San Mateo is among the largest San Francisco Peninsula suburbs that lies about 25 minutes from downtown San Francisco and 30 minutes from downtown San Jose. In its early history, the city was documented by Spanish colonists and missionaries. It later became a popular spot for the summer homes of wealthy San Franciscans and was home to A.P. Giannini, founder of what is now Bank of America.

Today, San Mateo is home to about 100,000 residents, and it features a number of beautiful natural landscapes including the Japanese Tea House and Garden, Coyote Point Park, and Shoreline Park. The city is also widely recognized for its historically significant residential architecture and notable mansions.
